When asked to think of what “a cyclist” looks like, many people will conjure up an image of a MAMIL (a middle-aged man in Lycra).

At Discerning Cyclist, though, we’re on a mission to prove that you can cycle in style and comfort – especially if you’re commuting by bike or just like cycling around town.

In this guide, therefore, we’ve compiled 15 of our favorite urban cycling clothing brands that perfectly toe the line between style and function. In its simplest form, we want to present you with stylish, everyday-looking clothes that boast discreet functionality for cycling.

1. Chrome Industries

When it comes to stylish commuter cycling gear, Chrome Industries are the kings of the urban jungle.

That’s largely because Chrome are devoted to urban cycling. It’s what they’re all about. As they put it, their mission is “making durable useful gear that works on and off the bike”.

And Chrome are no flash in the pan. They’ve been hard at it since 1995.

Their gear looks great, feels fantastic on the bike and is tough as a

The great things about Chrome’s gear is that not only does it look and feel great, it’s also as tough as old nails.

Chrome’s sturdy backpacks and messenger bags are amongst their most popular products, but they also make great urban bike shorts and shoes with stiff soles for cycling.

2. Ministry of Supply

“The world’s best clothing, backed by science.”

That’s the claim that Ministry of Supply make and it’s hard to argue against them.

The American-based company was launched in 2012 and they essentially create high-performance business wear for men and women.

At Ministry of Supply you’ll find a extensive range of smart shirts, trousers and even blazers that have been built to be light, stretchy and comfortable – which means they also perform exceptionally well when cycling to work too.

Beautiful gear – but pricey.

3. Rapha (City Collection)

Ask any keen cyclists what brand they think of when you mention the words “cycling” and “fashion” and Rapha will almost certainly be the answer.

Rapha are very much a Marmite brand – some people love (like, really love) them, while others hate them. This is largely because Rapha is all about exclusivity and their pricing is undoubtedly on the high side. That said, you do get real quality for your money.

The majority of Rapha’s production line in focussed on road cycling. But if you’re after stylish clothes you can cycle in (i.e. something you can ride to work in and then look smart at the office), the Rapha City Collection is nothing short of stunning.

4. DUER

Despite DUER not necessarily being a “cycling brand”, it nevertheless makes absolutely awesome activewear for commuters. The gear looks and feels great.

They specialise in making trousers and shorts, which they claim are the “world’s most comfortable pants”.

And having worn various of their garments over the years, they’re not far wrong.

Their urban pants are built to stretch and breathe – while never compromising on style.

So while DUER isn’t focussed only on cyclists, they have nevertheless managed to create some of the best urban cycling pants in the world for men and women.

5. Mission Workshop

If price is no issue and you want the very best urban cycling clothing for men built with premium modern styles and incredible high-performance technology, then Mission Workshop is an important port of call.

Their commuter gear is the perfect blend of style and function and no-one would suspect that you are wearing “cycling clothes”.

I’ve reviewed a few pieces of Mission Workshop gear in the past including The Hayes shirt and the outstanding The Division Chino.

As I alluded to at the start, though, this is truly premium gear and you’ll be paying a premium for it (The Division Chinos come in at £205/$225, for example). But if you’re happy to pay for the best, you certainly won’t regret it.

6. Ornot

Ornot is a quirky San Francisco-based cycling brand that has an excellent non-cycling-cycling-clothes range suitably called “Wear It On Your Bike Ornot“.

Ornot specialize in sporty cycling wear, but their urban range is excellent. It consists of hoodies, jumpers, t-shirts, trousers and some excellent – and I mean excellent – urban bike shorts.

They’re still early days in their urban wear journey, but I’ve got my fingers crossed that they continue to expand upon their already excellent range.

7. Velocio (Commute Range)

Velocio are commite to creating “cycling apparel that improves the experience of riding”. The majority of their gear is devoted to road cycling or touring, but you’ll also find some urban cycling gems in their Commute range.

The Commute range isn’t the biggest, but there is some really stunning pieces to be found with the Velocio Recon Snap Jacket being one of the favourite jackets I own – it’s stunningly stylish, while also being incredible lightweight yet warm due it’s fleece lining.

Although it’s not the biggest collection, Velocio have covered all bases, with a range of jackets, tops, t-shirts, trousers, shorts and accessories available for both men and women.

8. Sigr (Commute Collection)

Scandinavia knows a thing or two about style and cycling, and Sigr is the embodiment of this.

Based in Sweden, Sigr’s Commuter range is a thing of elegant practicality. Their range of urban cycling clothing remains small, but everything in it oozes quality.

That said, you’ll find everything you’ll need for a summer or winter commute: trousers, chinos, shorts, a polo and a couple of great cycling jackets – all of which comes in both men’s and women’s versions.

While their urban range in minimalistic in design, Sigr have managed to squeeze in as much cycling functionality as they could into their products, meaning as well as breathability and stretch, you’ll also find reflective detailing on the rear of their trousers and shorts.

9. Osloh Bicycle Jeans

While Resolute Bay are the masters of cycling jeans in Europe, in North America, that title belongs to Osloh.

Indeed, Osloh specialise in only creating cycling jeans. I’ve tried and tested them through the years and they are extremely hard-wearing and they are probably the toughest jeans you’ll ever own.

Osloh produce bike jeans for both men and women and there are two things I can guarantee you’ll find: lots of reinforcement on seams and hard-wearing areas and an abundance of pockets (7 pockets, on the Traffic Jean, for example).

Although they only make jeans, Osloh also sell some other handy cycling accessories, including the innovative Tex-Lock plus some other cool lights, mirrors and bike bells.

10. Vulpine

A few years ago, Vulpine were the darlings of urban cycling fashion. And it wasn’t hard to see why. They had mastered the art/science blend of form and function, creating a stunning collection of city cycling gear and accessories.

But it all came tumbling down in 2017 when the company surprisingly went into administration despite raising over £1 million in online crowdfunding barely two years earlier.

The company was subsequently bought by another cycling brand, but they too went bust not long later.

But now Vulpine seem to be finding their feet again under new leadership and a more pragmatic business model.

Regardless of all of the “off-the-field” problems, Vulpine remain a great place to find some great-looking urban cycling attire packed with discreet functionality for cycling for both men and women.
