Buying an E-Bike in Britain

In Britain, although electric bikes haven’t taken off to the extent they have in continental Europe, there are many ways to buy one.

Despite some troubles post-Brexit there are a wealth of electric bikes available to UK consumers. From brands that only sell directly to your front door to those manufacturers you can find in any number of bike shops.

Where Can I Buy an Electric Bike?

Like most buying decisions these days you can choose to shop online and have your bike delivered to your chosen location – whether that’s home or work. It’s convenient and your can shop in your own time, rather than being restricted by miserly opening times and long travel distances.

Some people still like the experience of buying in person and there are plenty of good old-fashioned bike shops up and down the UK to satisfy that demand. With the huge breadth of electric bikes available, sometimes there’s no substitute for an expert walking you through the features and foibles in person.

Plus, given their value, you might feel more comfortable taking your bike home, rather than putting it in the hands of a delivery company.

There is a third way too! You could decide to shop from the comfort of your own home and collect your bike in the store at your local dealer. This way you can easily access the wealth of online information, checkout out at the best price and still receive a helping hand in person.

Best Electric Bike Online Shops (UK)

Chain Reaction Cycles electric bike page

1. Chain Reaction Cycles

Historically Chain Reaction Cycles has been a go-to place for UK shoppers who were interested in mountain biking. These days their range is broader than that with different cycling tastes catered for.

When it comes to electric bikes, Chain Reaction’s mountain bike past does shine through with more E-MTBs available than any other type. At the time of writing, the choice of electric bikes was surprisingly limited – just under 30 models were in stock.

That said, you can buy an electric bike from Chain Reaction Cycles safe in the knowledge that the company knows a thing or three about sourcing, listing, packing, shipping and delivering online orders. The website has over 140,000 reviews on Trustpilot!

From folding electric bikes made for lifting onto a train to a comfortable step-through e-bike for picking up the weekly shop, Velorution is the go-to place for city and folding e-bikes.

Evans Cycles electric bike page

5. Evans Cycles

Of the stores on our list with both an online store and physical shops, Evans has the tightest range of electric bikes. The retailer’s most popular brands include the likes of Specialized, Cannondale, Trek, Raleigh, Brompton and Haibike.

Shopping with Evans also means you can take advantage of their store network. With locations from Aberdeen to York and Swansea to Dunstable click and collect is a genuine delivery option for residents up and down the length of the UK. Unfortunately irrespective of your order total, you’ll still have to pay £19.99 to deliver your bike to the store.

Evans’ online store is simply laid out and easily navigable on both desktop and mobile devices. Key points are displayed with colour or iconography. Unfortunately buying guides or riding inspiration isn’t at the forefront of the website.

Sigma Sports electric bike page

5. Sigma Sports

Sigma Sports has been a go-to in recent years for cyclists in the UK with its fresh look, excellent selection of products, great prices and fast delivery.

Very different to their competition, we very much enjoy Sigma Sports’ electric bike category page. Key features of individual bikes are available without clicking into each product, making it easy to compare and contrast electric bikes quickly and easily. Filtering products by size, colour or brand is possible. There are also over 15 more ways to filter in order to find your perfect electric bike.

Their range of electric bikes definitely matches Tredz’s in terms of breadth. It’s nice to see the addition of brands like Focus and Riese and Muller at Sigma Sports, two lesser well-known brands that can be hard to find amongst the larger online UK cycle shops.

Best Place for Cheap E-Bikes

Decathlon electric bikes page

7. Decathlon

The last retailer on our list, and perhaps the best shop to buy a cheap e-bike, is Decathlon. Big in continental Europe, it’s great to see their electric bike offering available in the UK too.

All told, there are over 70 electric bikes available at Decathlons online store. To supplement their own range of electric bikes, they list a range of models from third parties like E-Bikes Direct and Hygge Bikes (be careful to make note of the separate terms and conditions that apply to these products).

Although their range doesn’t include any electric road or electric gravel bikes, their offering is more than acceptable and comes in a variety of price points.

2 years warranty is available on all Decathlon products and in terms of fulfilment, you can choose to collect your order in a Decathlon store or pay £14.99 to have a bike delivered. Pleasingly you can choose to reschedule the delivery of the bike should you not be available.
