7 Things to Pack for a Long-Distance Cycling Adventure

There is a wide array of health benefits associated with regular cycling. Not only can cycling increase your cardiovascular fitness, but you will also notice a decrease in stress levels, improved posture, and increased muscle strength and flexibility. If you’re heading on a long-distance cycling adventure, having everything you need for the journey is important. Here are five things you don’t want to leave at home when heading out on your bicycle.

Water

If there is one thing you can’t leave home without before a long-distance cycling trip, it’s water (and plenty of it!). When cycling for many hours, you can’t assume that the shops will be open, or in close proximity. Your body needs to keep hydrated throughout the trip, so having plenty of water to quench your thirst is essential.

Food

As well as water, your body needs fuel to get through the cycling trip. When riding long distances, eating a combination of carbohydrates, protein and fat is vital for warmth, slow-energy release, and muscle repair. If you’re not eating along the way, your body will run low on glycogen, meaning you’ll stop in your tracks and find it difficult to continue.

Rain Jacket

We all know how unpredictable the weather can be in the UK. Even if you set off cycling in the sunshine, clouds can soon form. When you find yourself in a downpour, you’ll want to be wearing a rain jacket that offers protection. Cycling in high winds and rain can be a challenge, so it’s best to ride prepared with a waterproof, lightweight jacket.

Phone and Charger

Your phone will be your lifeline to not only keep in touch with loved ones on your cycling journey but as a form of entertainment too. When riding long-distance, you’ll need to stop for regular breaks. Keeping spirits up is key, so you must bring along a portable charger that will keep your phone topped up as you ride. Once you’re on a break, you’ll have full charge to surf social media, speak to loved ones, or even play some fun casino games.

First Aid Kit

No matter how much experience you have as a cyclist, there is always the risk of getting injured along the way. If you fall off your bicycle and cut your knee, having plasters and bandages to treat your injury is important. Having a first aid kit with you will mean you can deal with common ailments like cuts, grazes and open wounds which, in some cases, can be lifesaving.

A Map

Many of us rely on our smartphones a little too much. Unfortunately, technology will only get you so far. Should you drop your device, or your portable charger plays up, you can become lost very quickly. Having a map in your rucksack will help you pinpoint where you are and in what direction you need to head to get help.

Padded Shorts

The primary purpose of padded shorts is to cushion and protect the bottom and genitals from the pressure of the saddle’s body. As you’ll be spending many hours in the saddle, the last thing you want is to feel uncomfortable during your trip. Padded shorts will offer protection and comfort, allowing you to ride the open road without any issues.

Before you get in the saddle, creating a checklist and packing all the above will mean you have the essentials needed to enjoy your long-distancing cycling adventure.
